Star Wars v Star Trek
Guido has been using Star Wars comparisons about our wonderful government. I prefer to use Star Trek as an analogy. Labour are boldly going where no government has gone before. I could argue the British
Road Pricing/Tracking
Yesterday, the 10 Downing Street website was down for a time under the weight of people logging in to sign this petition to oppose the government's intrusive road pricing proposals. The government's proposal is to introduce road pricing. It will mean you have to buy a vehicle tracking device and pay a monthly bill to use it. The upfront cost will be about £200 and in a recent study by the BBC, the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and £194 for a delivery driver. On top of this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked. Somebody will know where you are at all times. If you accidentally creep over a speed limit you can expect a top-up with your monthly bill.

Here's another reason to get angry. Tony Sharp is rightly incensed by the government proposals to have a team of door-knockers visiting your house every year to update your council tax valuations. I smell civil disobedience.

the "team of door knockers" idea just simply impractical in today's world, with both parents out working for a living. and secondly, people are generally very wary of allowing complete strangers into their house , with the exception of uniformed coppers or medical staff.
very very doubtful if it will be practical, let alone needing civil disobience.
i could be entirely wrong. would like to know what others think.
They shall not pass !
At least foreign registered cars will be exempt from road pricing! No doubt those on low incomes will either receive subsidised tracking units or fines will be levied at such low rates (due to low disposable incomes) or so infrequently that it will be cheaper for them not to bother...
It is indeed fair to assume that I will be returning to the UK in a foreign-registered car.
I wrote a political theory thesis this past summer comparing Tony Blair to Adolf Hitler, so I would be very interested to read you firend's post on New Labour and Nazi Germany.
It's done. I've updated this post and here's the link.
Let them find their Poll tax I say; loks like two good candidates. The fuel protest in 2000 was a blow for them, but with DC having recovered now it would be lights out with another mass rebellion.
And when they come round knocking your door, if you smoke in your own home, they'll have you ordered to stop smoking and taken to court as it is a health hazard in their workplace!
Interesting. I came into the comments to write of the poll tax and Cityunslicker has already done it.

Since it is an EU Policy and currently under discussion in Germany - I think not
