Convicted Murderers On The Loose - Who Cares?

A teacher calling a pupil a cripple is front page news on the BBC website today. The following isn't!

Two convicted murderers escaped from an open (wtf) prison and have not had their photos published.

This is worth reading, but I want to pull out the incredible statement from a spokesman for Derbyshire Police - and I quote;

"When making a decision to release any photograph, police forces must take into account numerous factors including the public interest test,

Yes 11 of the 13 escaped convicts remain on the run, duh.

whether there is a strong local policing purpose

and this is a reason not to release the pictures!!!

and, of course, the Human Rights Act

which the Tories are committed to binning

and Data Protection Acts"

Still feel like you're on firm ground Recess Monkey?

Bel covers this too. I understand that after a great deal of ducking and diving on the BBC's 1pm news, it was announced that the photos have now been published. If there's any small c conservatives out there, it's time for you to get off the fence to do more to rid ourselves of this shower government.

Cut to the chase, when are becoming an MP?

The world is going mad. Perhaps putting criminals in prison in the first place is a threat to their personal liberty. Let's get some law changes in place. If someone act illegally then they should forfeit their rights. Human rights are precious, and earned by behaving properly, it's a two way thing. Abuse those rights and lose those rights.

Absolute rights in a society should be conditional. Western liberalism seems to have adopted the idea that all citizens "must" have the same rights. That is a luxurious, but ridiculous position to take.

Sorry should have read.

Absolutely. Rights..

What about the rights of the teacher who has been named and shamed!?!

Praguetory said...

I didn't realise that, Snafu. What a terrible and damning irony? And we wring our hands about why people don't want to go into teaching. Everything is arse about face.

The problem is not the HRA, its the morons who don't act because they don't understand the law and don't want to be subject to litigation.
The litigation fear is due to the constant undermining of responsibility of the individual and the litigation culture which is being spawned. Its never your fault - must be someone else's, preferably a collective entity which has no possibility of having practical responsibility but has nevertheless had responsibility accorded it by the law.

Something is deeply wrong if our police son't understand the law - although I don't discount that as a possibility. Their statement was a load of rubbish. Always be suspicious of someone with four or five excuses. It often means they have none.

Mr Praguetory,

It is not all 'arse about face', having just heard that the young Muslim who demanded the bombing of Denmark and the USA in response to the Mohammed cartoons has been convicted at the Old Bailey.

There is yet hope...

I frequently struggle to find a neat turn of phrase. Will the others be pleading guilty? It's about time I linked to you, isn't it Your Grace? Happy New Year.

The term "cripple" has been in use as part of our language for over 1000 years. It means a person unable to walk due to illness or disability. It was not considered offensive.
Interestingly, my father was disabled and my mother would use the word "cripple" to describe his disabled state.

In the 20th century the word has acquired offensive connotations and has been replaced by politer expressions such as "a person with a disability"

The richness of our language is wonderfull and I feel sad at the loss when a word becomes taboo. I can see a time when "socialist" might become to be considered an offensive description of someone. Will labour mps asked to be called "people with a policy problem"?

I ask you.

Elskidis - I'm dreaming of the time when Socialist is considered to be an offensive description of someone.

I have also covered this on http://donalblaney.blogspot.com. I have written to every member of Derbyshire Police Authority asking them to explain themselves. Expect no reply from these supposedly democratically accountable placemen...

Mr Praguetory,

His Grace would be honoured to be linked. He makes no demands for reciprocity; he is simply a lover of the intelligence and erudition of right-thinking people...

So now we discover that no one know how many prisoners are on the run nor, indeed, have been recaptured. Apparently there is not a reliable counting mechanism!

Worrying aint it.

The only figure we're sure of is 80,000 because that is the prison capacity and figures are full. The need for extra capacity has been predicted for years. Of course, the Home Office budget is frozen and no new prisons are planned so we can expect prisoner numbers to plateau.

This is done by making it increasingly difficult to get imprisoned, reducing sentences, ensuring early release, "opening" prisons and making no attempt to capture escapees.

I hope that's clear for everyone.
